Lay assessors are used by the government of the United Kingdom to evaluate the quality of service provided by government agencies to the public and citizens of the United Kingdom.

Lay assessor is also used alternatively with "lay judges" as the English term for laymen participating in judging in courts within the judicial system of Sweden (Swedish: nämndeman) and in Japan (裁判員, read "saiban-in").

In Fiji, serious criminal trials are conducted by a judge sitting with four lay assessors.
