History

Laurel was founded in about 1892. It was named for Laura Martin, the daughter of one of the founders.

Geography

Laurel is located at 42°25′41″N 97°5′35″W (42.427966, -97.093053).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.98 square miles (2.54 km2), all of it land.

2010 census

As of the census of 2010, there were 964 people, 415 households, and 263 families residing in the city. The population density was 983.7 inhabitants per square mile (379.8/km2). There were 474 housing units at an average density of 483.7 per square mile (186.8/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 96.8% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 1.2% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.4% of the population.

There were 415 households of which 26.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.4% were married couples living together, 5.3% had a female householder with no husband present, 1.7% had a male householder with no wife present, and 36.6% were non-families. 33.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.26 and the average family size was 2.90.

The median age in the city was 44.7 years. 22.6% of residents were under the age of 18; 6.4% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 21.3% were from 25 to 44; 25% were from 45 to 64; and 24.7% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 48.0% male and 52.0% female.

2000 census

As of the census of 2000, there were 986 people, 414 households, and 264 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,072.5 people per square mile (413.8/km²). There were 466 housing units at an average density of 506.9 per square mile (195.6/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 99.49% White, 0.20% Native American, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 0.10% from other races, and 0.10% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.30% of the population.

There were 414 households out of which 26.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.3% were married couples living together, 6.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.0% were non-families. 32.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 22.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.28 and the average family size was 2.91.

In the city, the population was spread out with 23.3% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 20.4% from 25 to 44, 19.8% from 45 to 64, and 30.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 45 years. For every 100 females there were 85.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.1 males.

As of 2000 the median income for a household in the city was $29,722, and the median income for a family was $35,662. Males had a median income of $26,731 versus $20,833 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,500. About 6.0% of families and 8.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.0% of those under age 18 and 7.2% of those age 65 or over.
