The Lafayette County Courthouse is located in Darlington, Wisconsin. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

History

The money to build the courthouse came from Matt Murphy, a native of Benton, Wisconsin, who left 70% of his estate in his will to the county for a courthouse. Ultimately, the cost of building the courthouse was more than $136,000. It is the only county courthouse in the United States to be fully funded by one person.
