In August 2015, it was announced Greta Gerwig would write and direct the film, with Scott Rudin, Eli Bush and Evelyn O’Neill producing the film. In January 2016, Saoirse Ronan joined the film. In March 2016, it was announced Sam Levy would serve as the director of photography on the film. In September 2016, John Karna, Tracy Letts, Beanie Feldstein, Laurie Metcalf and Timothée Chalamet joined the cast of the film. That same month, Jordan Rodrigues joined the cast of the film.
