The Kurumba Gounder is a south Indian community from the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Kurumba Gounder, referred to simply as Gounder. These caste people gather every year at Lakshmi temple to have coconuts smashed on their heads in a plea to the gods for health and success. Kurumba Gounder ( Kurumba, Kurumbar, Kurumbans ) are descendants of Pallavas. Mahabalipuram sculpture, adjacent to Madras is their legacy. They ruled South India for more than 600 years, from the 3rd century to the 9th century, and left a permanent mark in the field of art and architecture.

Distribution

People of this caste are found largely in Vellore district, Jolarpet, Tirupattur, Vaniyambadi, Krishnagiri, Tiruvanamalai district, Trichy, Pudukottai, Perambalur, Karur, Dindigul, Salem, Sivagangai, Theni, Madurai, Coimbatore, Ariyalur, Tanjavur, Theni and NamaKkal in Tamil Nadu state. Kurumba Gounders are also found in Trivandrum and Iduki in Kerala, Bangalore and some districts of Karnataka states.
