Konar is an ethnic group from the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.The Tamil word Kon means king. They are distributed throughout the state of Tamil Nadu, where they are one of the ancient Tamil castes. The Konar are also called Aayar and Idaiyar. In the early Sangam literature, the Aayars are described as having occupied the mullai or 'forest region'. The word Aayar is derived from the Tamil word "Aa" meaning 'cow'.
