"Knockers" is a song by English rock band the Darkness.

Contents

Origin and recording

The song is about a lonesome man trying to establish a relationship with a previous romantic partner. The title is a reference the female breast. The song also hints at impotence on the mans behalf. The chorus states I just love what you've done with your hair, oh yeah!, which is meant to be numerous and ironically respectful compliment for the protagonist to give to the woman in the song given his commentary in the rest of the lyrics. It is the second track in the band's sophomore album One Way Ticket to Hell... and Back and it was recorded at Chapel Studios, South Thoresby, Lincolnshire; Paul Smith Music Studios, London.

Release history

The song has been released in three different albums:

On 28 November 2005 on the band's second album One Way Ticket to Hell... and Back.

On 1 April 2008 in the first compilation album "The Platinum Collection".

On 4 August 2008 in the second compilation album "2 in 1: Permission to Land/One Way Ticket to Hell".

Critical reception

AllMusic criticized the song saying that it sounds like it was made from bits and pieces of Permission to Land reject songs.

PopMatters stated that the rollicking piano featured in the track adds another level of bawdiness to “Knockers”

Rolling Stone praised Justin Hawkins spearing vocal hook, but dismissed the title of the track stating that it was a "locker-room title".

musicOMH commented on the lyrical content of the song, stating that there was a "hint of impotence" that takes place in the "quaintly titled Knockers, Justin singing the unforgettable line, "you're beautiful and busty, but I'm a little rusty"."

Drowned in Sound stated "‘Knockers’, a reference, no doubt, to their numerous critical foes and musical detractors. It builds up from a chugging start, with open-road guitar and bar-room piano that nods to Lynyrd Skynyrd and the southern rock fraternity. Too sensible, so the track then explodes like a banshee into a monumental spasm of a hook with the straightforward words I just love what you do with your hair, oh Yeah!"
