Club

Murphy (nicknamed Hero) plays his club hurling with his local Erin's Own club in east Cork. He enjoyed much success at underage levels winning three county minor titles. In 2006 Murphy won a senior county championship medal with his club. In 2007 he captained Erin's Own to win their third county championship and their first two-in-a-row in that competition.

Inter-county

Murphy first came to prominence on the inter-county scene in 2000 as a member of both the Cork minor hurling and football team. He was the goalkeeper on the hurling team that won the Munster minor title that year. He also won a Munster as well as an All-Ireland minor football title that year. In 2001 Murphy's hurling side lost the Munster final to Tipperary, however, Cork later won the All-Ireland title via the 'back-door' system. Murphy later played with the Cork under-21 hurling and football sides. He had little success with the hurlers, however, he won a Munster Under-21 Football Championship medal in 2004.

At senior level Murphy decided to concentrate on hurling rather than football. He made his debut as a substitute in 2005 and has made several cameo appearances as a substitute since then. In his debut year he won a Munster and an All-Ireland medal. In December 2006 Murphy was appointed captain of the Cork team for the 2007 championship.
