It is also referred to as the Jamia Mosque predating Colonial occupation and is a glaring example of the secular culture of the region and country. In all probability, it was the first Mosque built in Pondicherry.
History
Kuthbha (meaning preaching) mosque is the first mosque in Pondicherry. It is said that during the 17th century, as the mosque was in the white area, the French ordered it and the Islamic neighbourhood shifted to the southern end of the town. These streets were built facing Mecca. It has the daarga of Moulla Saiubum. This mosque has daily preaching and prayers with special prayers on Fridays. This is mostly frequented by Tamil speaking Muslims.
Kuthba Mosque was built as Mulla Mohammad Mosque. This mosque has a small pond with fishes, clean hall, and Ramjan fasting food cooking hall and Jenesha in it.The mosque hold prayer sessions every day. Khutba Mosque has the architectural style of France with beautiful fresh water pool.
Dargah
At Khutba Mosque, visitors can go to the dargah of Moulla Saiubum. According to some, the dargah of Moulla Saiubha Kuthba has given the mosque its name. Mulla Mohammed Mosque is part of the Khutba Mosque. There is a small pond with fish and an expansive, clean hall.
Islamic festivals are held with a lot of fervor here. The mosque is illuminated and decorated during festive days and a lot of pilgrims visit Khutba Mosque.
