Khalid Ahmed Khan Kharal belonged to the Lakhera Kharal clan based in Kot Kamal Khan also known as Kamalia now. He was born in 1939 in Kamalia and died on 27 August 2017.

Kamalia town was founded by and named after Kharal chief, Khan Kamal Khan Kharal, in the 14th Century and was, historically, known as "Kot Kamalia". During the Indian Rebellion of 1857, it was one of the sites of an uprising by the local people, who held it for a week. In 1901, Kamalia had a population of 6,976. Kamalia was historically part of the erstwhile district and tehsil of Montgomery (Sahiwal), Punjab.

Khalid Ahmed Khan Kharal remained an influential member of the Pakistan Peoples Party from 1977 to 2012 and remained a Federal Minister twice in the government of Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto in 1988-1990 and 1993-1996.

He joined the Central Superior Services of Pakistan as an Assistant Commissioner in 1963. He served in important positions such as Director Industries Departement Punjab, Director Food Department Punjab, Deputy Commissioner and Political Agent in Dera Ghazi Khan, Deputy Commissioner Larkana and Commissioner Larkana when Mr. Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto was the Prime Minister.

He was considered a close confidant of Mr. Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto. He was imprisoned during Zia ul Haq's Martial Law to testify against Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and upon his refusal he left the country in exile and joined the Government of Abu Dhabi as an Adviser on Economic Development. He lived in Abu Dhabi for 15 years.

He has been elected as a Member of the National Assembly from the Kamalia Constituency. He was considered a very influential person in his district. In 2007 he announced that he would not be contesting the upcoming general elections. His son, Haider Ali Khan Kharal would be contesting instead of him from the PPPP ticket.

He joined Pakistan Tehreek e Insaaf due to his differences with the new PPP leadership under President Asif Ali Zardari but later in January 2017 he rejoined Pakistan People's Party along with Faisal Saleh Hayat after they had a meeting with Asif Ali Zardari in Bilawal House Karachi.
