Publication history

The kelpie first appeared in the adventure module White Plume Mountain (1979). The kelpie appeared in the original first edition Fiend Folio (1981).

The kelpie appeared in second edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons in Monstrous Compendium Volume Two (1989), and appeared under the "intelligent plant" entry in the Monstrous Manual (1993).

The kelpie appeared in the third edition Fiend Folio (2003).

Description

A kelpie is a mass of animate seaweed that can alter its form to resemble a woman, a hippocampus, or a green horse. It can charm a humanoid into thinking it can rescue the kelpie, which then grapples the victim until it drowns.
