He is well known for questioning the legality of the Dallas Stars' game-winning goal in the 1999 Stanley Cup Finals. Gave noted that Brett Hull's skate was in the crease when he scored the goal, which was illegal in the National Hockey League at the time. The NHL allowed the goal to stand and the Dallas Stars were the 1999 Stanley Cup Champions.

Gave worked for the Dallas Morning News for the 1997/98 and 1998/99 NHL seasons, where he also covered Ice hockey at the 1998 Winter Olympics, before joining CBS Sportsline in the fall of 1999. He currently writes non-sports related editorials for mlive.com in his native state of Michigan.

In addition to his work as a print journalist, Gave co-hosted a morning show called The Morning Battery with Butch Stearns on all-sports radio station WDFN-AM in Detroit from February 1995 until January 1996. Gave succeeded former Major League pitcher Lary Sorensen, who was the original co-host of the show which began in July 1994.
