Keelkattalai (Tamil: கீழ்கட்டளை) (also written as Kilkattalai or keezhkattalai) is a suburb in south Chennai, Tamil Nadu under the Pallavaram municipality,Kancheepuram district. It is primarily a residential locality serving to the needs of mainly the middle income groups.

Name

The name Keelkattalai is derived from the word கீழ் from கிழக்கு (meaning east) and கட்டளை (meaning village) and translates to "The village in the east" i.e.', it is in the east with respect to Pallavaram,a pallava era settlement.

Transport

The area is very well served by public transportation (MTC) and a bus terminus is located on the Medavakkam main road and is located 10 km from the Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) at Thoraipakkam, 6 km from the Grand Southern Trunk Road (GST Road) at Pallavaram and 5 km from Velachery. The main road links serving this area is the Medavakkam Main Road and the Thoraipakkam - Chromepet radial road.The railway stations close to Keelkattalai are Pallavaram, St Thomas mount and Velachery stations.

Development

The major work going on here is the completion of the underground sewerage network in the municipal limits and widening of the medavakkam main road. Besides the major works, tasks like installing street lamps, roads and road signs are also taking place.
