Katy Deacon, an Energy Engineer working for Kirklees Metropolitan Council, has been a figurehead in the implementation of a number of renewable energy systems in West Yorkshire and has been presented with several awards.

Use of wind turbines and solar power in schools is just one of these such projects that Katy has worked on. As part of her master's degree, she has created a renewable energy 'tool kit' for architects, engineers and other developers to maximise efficiency and integration of renewable energy into the development of buildings. This 'toolkit' won the NICEIC Energy Efficiency Product of the Year in 2006. Currently she is developing a reading system to automatically monitor consumption of electricity, gas and water across building complexes.

Katy was presented with 'The IET Young Woman Engineer of the Year' award in 2007. She attained Chartered Engineer Status in 2008 and received the Women's Engineering Society (WES) 'Karen Burt Award' in 2009. This award is presented to the most outstanding newly chartered female engineer across the UK Engineering and IT institutions.
