On 25 January 2014 at his first interview with the press upon being appointed Director-General Momii caused controversy by playing down the issue of the sexual slavery of so-called comfort women by the Japanese military in World War II. As head of Japan's state run media he also said that NHK should support the Japanese government in its territorial dispute with China and South Korea.
