Barangays

It is politically subdivided into 15 barangays.

History

Kalamansig was formerly the town center of the neighboring municipality of Lebak in the north. However, in 1951, the seat of government of the Municipality of Lebak, province of Cotabato was transferred from Kalamansig to Salaman in the north.

Ten years later, Carlos P. Garcia signed Executive Order 459 dated December 29, 1961, creating the municipality of Kalamansig from certain barangays of Lebak and Palimbang.

From Lebak, 20 barangays were taken: Kalamansig, Lun, Pitas, Dansalan, Pedtegenan, Madu, Port Lebak, Lenek, Sta. Clara, Sebayor, Nalilidan, Bosawon, Calubcub, Camp III, Poral, Limulan, Simsiman, Cadiz and Tipudos.

Meanwhile, 8 barangays were taken from Palimbang: Sangay, Mat, Danawan, Paril, Babancao, Basiawan, Narra and North Kulaman.

Etymology

Like most municipalities in the Philippines, Kalamansig traces its name from various legendary origins. A popular folklore among the Manobos, a tribe of people who were among the earliest inhabitants of the place, explained that the name originated from a phrase “Kulaman-su-wayeg”, which literally translates as “Kulaman in the water”. Kulaman is said to be a famous Sultan of the Valley during the seventeenth century. According to the legend, a long famine came to the place and the Sultan, who was a loving father and provider to his family, ventured alone and gathered cassava, a staple food of the Manobos, for their consumption. Before returning home, the Sultan decided to wash the root crop in a river, but a sudden and strong river current arrived and swept the aging Sultan from his feet, carrying him downstream and was drowned in the process. His body was later found and recovered downriver, coining the word “Kulaman-sa-ig” (Kulaman in the water).

The name evolved into “Kalamansig” which later become the official name. In honor of this Manobo tribal leader, the river where he was found was named after him and later, the entire upper valley was called “Kulaman”. This barangay is now part of the Municipality of Sen. Ninoy Aquino.

Crops

The major crops of the Municipality are coconut, coffee, banana, rice, corn, durian and other high valued crops. Coffee is the major crop of Barangay Datu Wasay while Barangay Nalilidan considered coconut as their major agricultural crop.

Production

The farmers in the Municipality are engaged in planting rice, corn, coconut, coffee, banana, durian, lanzones, marang, rambutan and mango. The rice planted in low land irrigation has the highest yield with 5.75 tons per cropping while rice planted in upland areas has the lowest production with 1.5 ton per cropping. In corn production, the table shows that hybrid corn has greater production than inbreed corn.

Agricultural Production Support

The Municipal Local Government Unit (MLGU) through the Office of the Municipal Agriculturist implemented Plant Now Pay Later Program which aimed to strengthen to capability of the farmers to uplift their living condition and achieve increased agricultural production. Under this program, the farmers are planting high valued crops like durian, rambutan, lanzones, mangosteen and mango. Barangay Limulan received the highest financial assistance from the MLGU to implement the above-mentioned program followed by Barangays Sta. Clara, Datu Ito Andong and Hinalaan.

The Barangays Sangay, Sta. Clara, Datu Wasay, Cadiz, Sta. Maria, Obial and Dumangas Nuevo were beneficiaries of OMAG-MLGU Fertilizer Subsidy. The main objective of this undertaking is to help the farmers increased agricultural production by using high yield fertilizers for their crops. Barangay Sangay received the highest amount of fertilizer distributed by the OMAG and MLGU followed by Barangays Dumangas Nuevo, Cadiz and Sta. Maria.

Rice

The Municipal Local Government Unit (MLGU) through the Office of the Municipal Agriculturist distributed high yield rice seeds to all farmers in the Municipality of Kalamansig. The recipients of this program were Barangays Sangay, Sta. Maria, Datu Wasay, Sta. Clara, Cadiz, Obial, Poblacion and Dumangas Nuevo. Out of the eight recipients barangays, Barangay Sangay received the highest number of bags of certified seeds, followed by Barangays Dumangas Nuevo, Sta. Maria and Cadiz.

Corn

There were 483.14 hectares planted to yellow corn with a total production of 1.934 metric tons having average production of 4 metric tons per hectare. Another 1,719 hectares were planted to white corn with a total production of 5,529 metric tons per hectare averaging 3 metric tons per hectare.

High Valued Commercial Crops

At present, the Municipality of Kalamansig has a total of 351.13 hectares planted with different fruit trees especially durian, lanzones, mango and rambutan. More than 30% of these crops were acquired by the farmers through the Plant Now Pay Later Program of the MLGU which spearheaded by the Office of the Municipal Agriculturist (OMAG). This program encouraged, served and helped more than 100 farmers to plant different asexually propagated seedlings of fruit trees in order to increase income of the farmers. The project contributed products comparable to other places in terms of quality produce. This year, the beneficiaries of the program started to settle their accounts to the Municipal Treasurer’s Office (MTO).

The high valued commercial crops planted by the farmers in the Municipality were coffee, banana, durian, mango, mangosteen, rambutan, lanzones, coconut, pomelo, and citrus. Coffee has the largest area utilized for production, followed by coconut, banana and pomelo. In terms of production, mango has the highest number of production with an average 15 tons per hectare.

The seedlings propagated in the Municipal Nursery are rubber, lanzones, mango, rambutan, pomelo, durian and mangosteen. Rubber has the highest number of stocks, followed by pomelo, lanzones and mangosteen. Lanzones has the highest number of grafted/budded seedlings, followed by rambutan and mango.

Livestocks

The Office of the Municipal Agriculturist implemented health care and management to all domestic animals in the Municipality. Some of these activities are deworming, vaccination, castration, disbudding, pregnancy diagnosis and other related activities.

Animal Breeding Stations

Out of 15 barangays of the Municipality, Barangay Cadiz is the only barangay which engaged in breeding animals. According to records, Barangay Cadiz has 7 cattle, carabao, goats and 4 swines used as breeding animals. This activity is one of the livelihood projects of Mindanao Rural Development Program (MRDP) which provided to accredited People’s Organization (PO) of the barangay.

Farm Animals

The Municipality of Kalamansig engaged in raising farm animals like carabao, cattle, swine, goat, chicken, duck and horse. Chicken is the highest farm animals raised by the people followed by duck, swine and goat.

Fisheries

From Year 2006-2008, there were eight (8) People Organizations (POs) who availed fishery and production inputs assistance from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), Land Bank of the Philippines-Lebak Branch and Municipal and Provincial Local Government Units. These POs include Kalamansig United Fishermen Association, Kalamansig Tuna Deep Sea Fishing MPC, Balot Small Fishermen Association, Poral Small Fishermen Association, Islamic Brotherhood Organization, Kalamansig Marine Fishermen Association, Kalamansig Fishermen Rangers Association and Kalamansig Tuna Deep Sea Fishing MPC.

Bottom Set Gill Net (Patuloy)

All coastal barangays in the Municipality availed the Bottom Set Gill Net (Patuloy). There were 17 fishermen each coastal barangays who became beneficiaries of the program. The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) provided this fishing paraphernalia through the coordination of Municipal Local Government Unit (MLGU).

The distribution of Bottom Set Gill Net (Patuloy) was headed by Hon. Joaquin T. Concha, Municipal Vice Mayor and assisted by the Municipal Sangguniang Bayan Members, MFARMC Chairman Elegio Staples Municipal Agriculturist and Municipal Fishery Coordinators.

Squid Jigger

All coastal barangays in the Municipality availed the Squid Jigger fising paraphernalia. There were 4 fishermen each coastal barangays who became beneficiaries of the program. The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) provided this fishing gear through the coordination of Municipal Local Government Unit (MLGU).

Fish Cages

There were two (2) People Organizations (POs) who availed the fish cages extended by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAD) such as Paril Aquaculture Fishermen Association and certain PO from Barangay Dumangas Nuevo. This activity was implemented through the coordination of Municipal Local Government Unit (MLGU).

Aquasilvi Culture (Mudcrab)

Isla Verde Fish Farmers Association was the only recipient of Aquasilvi Culture (Mudcrab) Program of the Bureau of the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR). This program was implemented by the Municipal Local Government Unit (MLGU) through the technical assistance of the Office of the Municipal Agriculturist (OMAG).

Multiple Set Long line (Palangre)

The Tipudos Palangre Operators Asso. was the only recipient of Multiple Set Long Line (Palangre) Program of the Bureau of the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR). This PO was composed of 15 members who are all living at Tipudos, Cadiz, Kalamansig, Sultan Kudarat. This program was implemented by the Municipal Local Government Unit (MLGU) through the technical assistance of the Office of the Municipal Agriculturist (OMAG).

Production Inputs Assistance

There were 13,000 bangus fingerlings and fry distributed to all fishpond operators in the Municipality of Kalamansig. Antonio Par, Elias Sorongon, SKSU Kalamansig Campus, Meinardo Concha, Meleton Bernales, Jordan Diarol, Angkap Amad, Abdul Pagayao and Vicente Divinagracia received the highest number of bangus fingerlings and fry.

There were 108 fishing vessels registered in the Municipality of Kalamansig. Kalamansig Tuna Deep Sea Fishing (MPC) has the highest number of fishing vessels followed by Elizardo Ruaza and Harvey S. Kasan.

There were 23 organized cooperative and fisherfolks accredited in the Municipal Local Government Unit (MLGU) through the Office of the Municipal Agriculturist (OMAG). These People Organizations (POs) were beneficiaries of different local and foreign funding agencies who provided financial assistance for the implementation of their fishery and agricultural livelihood projects.

There were 20 fishpond operators registered in the Municipal Local Government Unit (MLGU). The Sultan Kudarat State University (SKSU) Kalamansig Campus has the largest fishpond being developed followed by Vicente Divinagracia, Calixto Nitre, Jr., Rolando Catalan and Nilo Solamillo.

Agricultural Infrastructure

In terms of inventory of warehouse and solar driers, Barangay Sangay has the highest number of commercial warehouse and solar driers, followed by Barangays Sta. Clara and Sabanal. These agricultural support facilities greatly contribute to the effort of the farmers to achieve increased agricultural production.

Post Harvest Facilities

The Municipality of Kalamansig has post harvest facilities like cono, rubber roll, sheller and thresher. Out of 15 barangays, Barangay Sangay has the highest number of the above-mentioned post harvest facilities, followed by Barangay Datu Wasay and Dumangas Nuevo.

Local Financial Institutions

The Municipality of Kalamansig has two local financial institutions namely One Network Bank and Kalamansig Public School Teachers Multi-Purpose Cooperative (KPSTMPC). These financial Institutions cater the banking, lending and credit needs of the people.

Establishments

Barangay Poblacion has the highest number of business establishments which usually engaged in sari-sari retailing, whole selling, buying and selling of agricultural products. Other engaged in fish vending/brokerage, videoke houses and other related small scale entrepreneurship.
