Rojo was a musician, arranger, composer and band leader. In the Philippines, he was the musical director of the Manila Grand Opera House and Clover Theater. He and wife Julia moved to San Francisco in the summer of 1970 with 11 of their 12 children, where he formed the Johnny Rojo Family band with his sons and daughter. The family performed as the Sunday house band for weekly stage shows at the Mabuhay Gardens nightclub, backed up celebrity artists from the Philippines for concerts or studio recordings, and played on TV shows, Amapola's Fiesta Filipina, and Something Pinoy.
