In September 2010, José knocked out the veteran Miguel Tique to win the vacant WBC Youth World Super Bantamweight title.

On March 26, 2011 Salgado got a third round knockout over title contender Everardo Morales to win the vacant NABF Super Flyweight Championship.

Then José got a first round knockout over challenger Carlos Ariel Farías to win the vacant North American Boxing Association Super Flyweight Championship.
