Joseph Thwaites (c.1780–1857) was an English trader, served as delegate in The British Commercial Rooms. He belonged to the group of British merchants, who had done business in Buenos Aires and Montevideo, between 1810 and 1830.

Thwaites was born in London, England, in 1809 had arrived in the port of Buenos Aires in trade mission. He settled with his family in the village of Ranchos, where they were owners of several hectares. Thwaites was married with Juana Rubio del Rivero, criolla born in Buenos Aires, sister in law of Daniel Gowland, member of a powerful Anglo-Saxon family established in Argentina.
