Joseph Christoffel Hoagland (June 19, 1841 - December 8, 1899, Manhattan) was the president of the Royal Baking Powder Company.
Biography
He was born on June 19, 1841 in Ohio to Andrew Hoagland, and he had a brother, Cornelius Hoagland (1828–1898). By his marriage, in 1865, with Caroline C., daughter of John Matlack of Dayton, Ohio, he had three children, Raymond (1866-1927), John A. and Fanny L. Hoagland.
He had an acrimonious split with his business partner, William Ziegler in 1888. He died on December 8, 1899.
He was descended from Sarah Rapelje, the first Woman of European descent born in New York to Dutch-settler parents. His great great great granddaughter is Clare Balding, the BBC TV presenter, journalist and jockey.
