The Joplin-Miami, MO-OK MSA, as defined by the United States Census Bureau, is an area now consisting of three counties, Jasper and Newton counties in southwest Missouri, and Ottawa County, OK in extreme northeast Oklahoma, all anchored by the city of Joplin. The addition of Ottawa County was officially added to the Joplin Metropolitan area in April 2013. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 175,518, though as of the 2015 estimates, the population is 209,192.

The racial makeup of the MSA was 93.5% White, 1.5% African American, 1.6% Native American, 1.0% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 1.45% from other races, and 2.23% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population. For ever 100 females there are 95.3 males.
