Jokowi Effect

Jokowi Effect (Indonesian: Efek Jokowi) is a term coined to describe the influence of media popularity of Governor of Jakarta Joko Widodo (or Jokowi) on Indonesian politics and economy. In politics, declaring Jokowi as a presidential candidate in Indonesian presidential election, 2014 is believed to boost the percentage of Indonesian Democratic Party – Struggle to 30% in the Indonesian legislative election, 2014. Meanwhile, in the capital market, the effect is said to stimulate the Indonesian stock market and rupiah, as Jokowi is regarded as having a clean track record. But this effect proven only temporary and mainly only due to partisan media euforia. Two months after he was elected as president, rupiah sinks to its lowest value in 16 years.
