John de Moravia (also known as John Sutherland) (d. 1508) was the 8th Earl of Sutherland and chief of Clan Sutherland. During his chieftaincy his clan fought against the Clan Donald at the Battle of Skibo and Strathfleet.

John de Moravia, 8th Earl of Sutherland married firstly a daughter of John of Islay, Earl of Ross and Lord of the Isles and had the following children:

  1. John de Moravia, 9th Earl of Sutherland (died 1514)
  2. Alexander de Moravia (died young)
  3. Elizabeth de Moravia, 10th Countess of Sutherland (successor of her elder brother John, she married Adam Gordon, a younger son of George Gordon, 2nd Earl of Huntly, the chief of Clan Gordon).

John de Moravia, 8th Earl of Sutherland married secondly a daughter of the chief of the Clan Ross of Balnagown Castle and had the following two sons:

  1. Alexander Sutherland, 1st of Killipheder. He married a sister of the chief of Clan Mackay and disputed the right to the Earldom of Sutherland with his older sister Elizabeth and her Gordon husband. Alexander Sutherland's brother in-law, the chief of Clan Mackay fought against the Gordons at the Battle of Torran Dubh in Sutherland in 1517. Alexander Sutherland was later killed by the Gordons who succeeded as Earls of Sutherland at the Battle of Alltachuilain in 1518.
