Career

Stein began playing guitar at seven, taking an interest in folk and classical music, and jazz during his teens. When he was thirty, he attended the Berklee College of Music and has taught there. His influences include Wes Montgomery, Jim Hall, Bill Evans, and Hank Mobley. His released his debut album, Hustle Up! (Knitting Factory), in 1995.

He has recorded with David "Fathead" Newman and has worked with Bill Pierce, Kenneth Weinberger, John LaPorta, and Bob Freedman. Stein has performed onstage with Lou Donaldson, Lonnie Smith, Johnny Vidacovich, and Idris Muhammad. He has performed in Europe, conducting tours in Germany, France, Switzerland, Brazil, and the U.S.
