Biography

John Bartholomew Wakelyn Nightingale was born on 7 September 1960, the son of Michael David Nightingale and Hilary Marion Olwen Jones. He married Lucy Charlotte Fergusson, daughter of Dr. Patrick Drummond Fergusson and Alison Mary Miles, on 24 December 1996.

Nightingale was educated at Winchester College, Winchester, Hampshire, England. He graduated from Magdalen College, Oxford, with a Master of Arts and later with a Doctor of Philosophy (D.Phil.) as well. At Merton College, Oxford, he was the Harmsworth Senior Research Scholar between 1984 and 1986. In 1986, he became a Fellow of Magdalen College and later, from 1993, a Tutor of Modern History.

Nightingale is also an elected Fellow of the Governing Body of Winchester College.
