Playing career
Prior to turning professional, Mitchell attended the University of Wisconsin–Madison where he played four seasons of college hockey with the NCAA Division I Wisconsin Badgers men's ice hockey team. On August 5, 2014, the Dundee Stars of the EIHL announced they had signed Mitchell to a one-year contract.
