Biography

Fitzpatrick was ordained a priest on December 13, 1942 when he was 24 years old. He was appointed by Pope Paul VI as Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Miami and Titular Bishop of Cenae on June 24, 1968. On August 28, 1968, he was consecrated a bishop by Archbishop Coleman F. Carroll of the Archdiocese of Miami and his co-consecrators were Bishop Joseph Aloysius Durick of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Nashville and Joseph Bernardin of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago.

In 1971, he was appointed as the third Bishop of the Diocese of Brownsville. On November 30, 1991, he retired as bishop. Bishop Fitzpatrick again filled the role after the 1994 death of his replacement, Bishop Enrique San Pedro S.J., and served for nearly a year until the appointment of Bishop Raymundo Joseph Peña in 1995.
