John Gallagher was a cartoonist. His younger brother was George Gately, creator of Heathcliff, and Gallagher assisted on the strip. He died in 2005.

Career
He received the National Cartoonist Society Gag Cartoon Award for 1957 and 1971 for his work.
He has also done artwork for Magic: The Gathering.
