John McDermid



John McDermid, is President and Chief Operating Officer of International Business-Government Counsellors, Inc. (IBC). He has worked at IBC for over 25 years in international trade remedies, negotiations, and policies.

Prior to joining IBC, McDermid was Assistant General Counsel for the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM). At NAM, he managed international trade and antitrust issues. His earlier legal experiences included government service and private practice with the Washington, D.C. office of the New York firm of Reid and Priest. As an attorney with the Federal Trade Commission's Bureau of Competition, McDermid handled U.S. trade remedies and their effect on competition and consumers. He also participated in the U.S. Government’s interagency decision-making process on these issues. Prior to the FTC, he was a litigator and advisor in the Office of the General Counsel, U.S. International Trade Commission. He has testified frequently before various Congressional Committees on aspects of antitrust and international trade legislation.

McDermid’s published articles on international trade and antitrust have appeared in: Washington and Lee University Law Review, Vanderbilt Journal of Transitional Law, the Fletcher Forum, Mercer Law Review, and George Mason University Law Review. He has additionally published articles on intellectual property intellectual property rights (IPR) in India and Canada, for IPWatchdog, and lobbying, for the Washington Post.

McDermid was Chair of the India Interest Group’s Consumer Product Working Group and one of six private sector advisors to the government-to-government U.S.-India Economic Submission. In September 2001, he was appointed by the U.S. Trade Representative and Secretary of Agriculture to serve on the Agricultural Technical Advisory Committee for Trade.

McDermid earned an L.L.M. degree cum laude in International and Comparative Law from The University of Brussels. He completed his J.D. degree from The American University, Washington College of Law, and received his B.A. in History from Rollins College. He is a member of the District of Columbia Bar.
