One of Sam Houston Race Park's most prestigious races is named in honor of Texas governor John B. Connally who died in 1993. Inaugurated in 1995, it is one of only two graded stake race held at the park (along with the grade three Houston Ladies Classic), but it is one of the track's longest running races. Along with Ladies Classic Gr.3, Frontier Utilities Turf Sprint and Space City Stakes; John B. Connally Turf Cup is one of the main events of the Houston Racing Festival.
