Joey Haley (born 1974) is an international artist based in rural New Brunswick. His focus includes contemporary painting and drawing coupled with alternative art comics, with added work in other video and multimedia modalities.
Mid 1990’s Montreal Comics. In the mid 1990s Haley was a celebrated underground comic artist in Montreal, Quebec, publishing under the pseudonym Joe Hale. His works were featured in Vice magazine, Pervert comics (edited by Gavin McInnes), and various Montreal underground scene publications of the time. These underground publications featured artists like Julie Doucet, Rick Trembles, Henriette Valium, and others. These comics went on to be influential, creating a niche bootleg and ‘zine culture and going on to impact future artists including Christopher Forgues (aka C.F.). Joey Haley’s entire body of work from this era was published within "Love and Forgiveness", which is a collection of short stories. This collection was reissued through Toronto based art house publisher, Swimmers Group, in the fall of 2014, and was edited and curated by Canadian Cartoonist, Marc Bell.
2000’s Painting and Drawing Starting in 2006, Joey Haley had his first major Art exhibit at the Zieher Smith (now called Zieher Smith & Horton) in Chelsea, Manhattan. Haley went on to be represented by Tim Barber, and was featured on his online gallery Tiny Vices (now called "Time and Space"). This included curatorial exhibitions under Tiny Vices, which featured notable artists including Dash Snow, Ryan McGinley, Dan Colen, Richard Kern, and Aurel Schmidt. He was also curated by American Film Director David Lynch, featured on DavidLynch.com. Haley continues to exhibit internationally. Most recently, Haley is developing comics with Marc Bell. This includes work published in Kramers Ergot (issue #9).
Work Haley’s work is figurative. Themes he is best known for include cantankerous views of society placed within a science fiction dystopian backdrop, graphically depicted and brightly colored, involving explicit subject matter, often sexual. His paintings and drawings correspond to trend developments of the last decade, including New Weird America, K Punk, and Hauntology.
