Joe McElveen

Joseph T. McElveen, Jr. (born October 19, 1946) has served as Mayor of Sumter, South Carolina since November 2000.

Born in Sumter in 1946, he graduated from The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina in 1968. He later earned a law degree at the South Carolina, Law school in 1971. He served in the US Air Force until 1977, and received an honourable discharge. He served on the Sumter City council from 1984 to 1986 until he was elected in the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1986 to 1996.
