Joseph McDonald (10 February 1929 – 7 September 2003) was a Scottish footballer who played for Sunderland and the Scotland national football team. He was born in Blantyre, South Lanarkshire.

Club career

He started his footballing career with Falkirk in 1951, and went on to make 79 appearances without scoring for the club before moving to Sunderland in 1954. McDonald made his debut for Sunderland on 16 April 1954 in a 2–2 draw against Sheffield United at Roker Park. While playing for Sunderland, he made 155 appearances, scoring one goal. He joined Nottingham Forest; and made 109 appearances for them from 1958 until 1961 without a goal, playing in the 1959 FA Cup Final and Charity Shield. Before retiring he played for non-league team Wisbech Town.

International career

He won his first cap for Scotland against Northern Ireland on 8 October 1955 in a 2–1 defeat at Windsor Park. He went on to make one further cap for his country, in total making two, and scoring no goals. McDonald also played for a Great Britain side chosen to play Northern Ireland in 1955, to mark the 75th anniversary of the Irish Football Association.
