Jaunsari is a western Pahari language of northern India spoken in the Chakrata and Kalsi blocks of Dehradun district in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand state. It is said to be local variation of Garhwali . It is Part of western pahari language and similar to the Sirmouri. Jaunsari ,sirmouri, Kullvi, Pahadi of Shimla region are variation of the same language. Language spoken in all these region have many punjabi and Dogri words which can be attributed to their origin to sharadalipi. Punjabi and takri originates from sharada. Variation of takri is found in Shimla ,sirmouri, Mandi, Kullu region of Himachal and jaunsar -Babar of Uttarakhand. This region was always part of sirmaur , Jubbal and Tharoor riyasat till British came to this region and divided the region after 1814 AD.
The people of this region are Indo-Aryan in origin and claim to be descendants of the Pandavas of the Mahabharata. Though people on Uttarakhand region ie jaunsar-Bawar are given scheduled Tribe status, people of sirmaur and Shimla district are not, despit having same origin, culture and language with slight variation.
