Japanese House of Councillors election, 1989

Elections for the Japanese House of Councillors were held in Japan on 23 July 1989.

The election result was a setback for ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) because of the Recruit scandal, the introduction of a 3% consumption tax, and the involvement of Prime Minister Uno Sōsuke in a sex scandal. This is the first time that the LDP lost the majority in the House of Councillors. Until 2016, due to the House of Councillors without a simple majority, LDP need to cooperate and form coalitions with other parties.

The Japan Socialist Party-led oppositions won a majority of seats.
