James Anthony Ward (born 5 November 1994) is a former English professional footballer who plays as a central midfielder. He is currently without a club. Originally a member of West Ham United's youth system, Ward was released in 2010.

Early life

Ward was born in Guildford, Surrey, and attended The Winston Churchill School in Woking, Surrey. He grew up as a Millwall supporter and has claimed that he originally wanted to play for the south London club. As an eight-year-old, Ward trained at Chelsea's development centre in Guildford, but was not offered an academy place.

West Ham United

Ward joined the West Ham academy at the age of 10, and progressed through the ranks going on to captain the Under-16's. In March 2010, whilst playing against Birmingham City, Ward suffered a broken leg which resulted in him being stretchered off. In June 2010, he was released.

Woking

In July 2011, after taking a year out of football, Ward was invited to train with Woking in pre-season. He was given a six-week fitness regime in a bid to get him fit for the start of the season. He impressed and subsequently signed a 3-year deal upon leaving school. Ward was an unused substitute for Woking on three occasions, mainly playing for their academy. In December 2013, he left the club by mutual consent without ever making a first team appearance after he fell out with manager Garry Hill.

Westfield

In January 2013, Ward signed for Combined Counties Premier Division side Westfield. He immediately established himself as a first team regular. He scored on his debut in a 2-1 win over Banbury. A few weeks later, he grabbed a brace in a 4-0 win against Croydon Athletic. After 4 goals in 15 games, Ward went on to win young player of the season.

Sheerwater

In July 2013, Ward joined Combined Counties Division One side Sheerwater sighting distance as a major factor in his decision not to sign fresh terms with Westfield. Injury hampered Ward's season and he was limited to just 11 appearances before quitting football in March 2014 for personal reasons. .

Personal life

Ward comes from a footballing family with two of his cousins being professional footballers. Elliott, currently at League One side Blackburn Rovers, and Darren who was released by League Two side Yeovil Town in June 2017. Ward represented Great Britain in pool from the age of 13 to 16.
