James Martin (born May 29, 1991) is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenseman. He currently plays for the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League (AHL).

Playing career

Undrafted, Martin was signed in 2011 to a three-year entry level contract the Calgary Flames of the National Hockey League and was then assigned to affiliate, the Abbotsford Heat of the American Hockey League.

In 2012 Martin was assigned to Abbotsford again, but was assigned to the Utah Grizzlies of the ECHL for the majority of the season.

Martin started the 2013–14 season with Abbotsford as well but has been assigned to the Alaska Aces multiple times. Despite helping the Aces capture the Kelly Cup, Martin was not tendered a qualifying offer by the Flames and was released as a free agent.

On September 11, 2014, Martin was signed to a one-year standard players contract with the Fort Wayne Komets of the ECHL. During the 2014–15 season, in the midst of a career-high season in the ECHL with the Komets, in which he was selected to the ECHL All-Star Game, Martin was loaned to AHL affiliate, the Lake Erie Monsters on January 29, 2015. Martin appeared in 7 scoreless games with the Monsters before he was returned to the Komets for the post-season.

On September 1, 2015, Martin's ECHL rights were traded by the Komets to the Idaho Steelheads in exchange for Alex Belzile. Prior to the 2015–16 season, Martin was invited on a try-out basis to attend the Toronto Marlies training camp of the AHL. After impressing through pre-season, Martin opened the season with the Marlies, before securing an AHL contract after four games with the Marlies on November 26, 2015.
