James Duffy is a neuropsychiatrist and clinical faculty member at the University of California, San Francisco. He was the first physician president of the Institute for Religion and Health in the Texas Medical Center and has special interests in palliative medicine and integrative mental healthcare.

Biography

A graduate of the University of Rhodesia, Duffy completed his residency in psychiatry at Brown University. He then completed fellowships in neuropsychiatry at Brown and Harvard. Duffy has held full professorships at Cornell University, the University of Texas, the University of Connecticut, and the University of Arizona College of Medicine. He is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco.

Duffy was previously Chief of Integrative Medicine at Sierra Tucson and Professor of Psychiatry at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and the University of Texas. When he became president of the Institute for Religion and Health at the Texas Medical Center in 2005, Duffy was the first physician named to the post in the institute's 50-year history. Duffy is board-certified in adult psychiatry, psychosomatic medicine, integrative medicine, and medical acupuncture.

In 2001, Duffy co-authored The Frontal Lobes and Neuropsychiatric Illness, which was described in a British Journal of Psychiatry review as a "comprehensive, readable update on the frontal lobes in relationship to neuropsychiatric disorder." He serves on the board of directors for the International Network of Integrative Mental Health.
