John "Jack" Phillips was a Welsh professional football forward who played in the Football League, most notably for Bristol Rovers and Merthyr Town. He finished his league career having scored 107 goals in 179 games.

Early years

Phillips began his Football League career with West Bromwich Albion, Rochdale and Southend United.

Merthyr Town

Phillips returned to Wales to sign for Division Three South side Merthyr Town in 1925. His 31 goals in 57 appearances during his two seasons with the club failed to inspire the Martyrs to top-half finishes.

Brentford

Phillips signed for Division Three South club Brentford in 1927. Despite missing 19 league games, Phillips was in prolific form, scoring 18 goals in 23 matches during the 1927–28 season. He began the 1928–29 season in similar form, scoring four goals in his six four games, before being sold in September 1928. Phillips scored 22 goals in his 29 appearances for the Bees.

Later career

Phillips scored prolifically in spells with Bristol Rovers and Coventry City, before seeing his career out back in Wales with Merthyr Town, Barry and Troedyrhiw.
