McKay was born in Glasgow and played youth football with the Doncaster Rovers Academy alongside his studies at Hill House School, before starting his professional career with the club.

Personal life

McKay's father is football agent, Willie McKay and his twin brother, Paul is also a professional footballer with Doncaster Rovers.

Youth career

McKay played a major part in the 2014 Gothia Cup with Doncaster Rovers Under 18s, scoring in a one-nil win over Swedish side Malmo FF's academy. In the next fixture he scored a brace against the Besiktas Academy. In the fourth (and first knock-out) match of the tournament, McKay scored the equaliser against the IF Elfsborg Academy to take the match to penalties. Although he converted his, Rovers still lost and had to content themselves with a fifth/sixth placed play-off against Red Star Belgrade which was won, without McKay scoring.

Whilst at the academy, he gained interest from Premier League and Championship sides, such as Everton, Crystal Palace and Sheffield Wednesday.
