Prior to the books

Throughout Jack Churchill's childhood, he experiences strange dreams - dreams in which a beautiful, otherworldly woman visits him when he sleeps and names him as a Brother of Dragons. As he grows older and completes his archeology degree at Oxford University, the man known now as Church leaves these dreams behind him and becomes a promising young man, filled with life and compassion, even giving up his dream of a doctorate in order to help out a friend in trouble. He forges a happy life with his girlfriend Marianne, and they are on the verge of getting married when tragedy strikes and Church returns home to discover that his seemingly happy girlfriend has killed herself. This event strikes Church into such deep depression that his character utterly changes; he becomes an introverted shell, unable to cope with company or enjoy life the way he used to.

The Age of Misrule: World's End

Church opens this novel, and his character forms a core round which much of the rest of the story revolves. Although the story is about the Brothers and Sisters of Dragons as a collective, and frequently switches its narrative, Church is steadfastly the character to which the narrative returns, giving him a certain central status.
