J-pod is a pod of Killer Whales or Orcas that live in and around the San Juan Island, Washington (state) area in the United states. The pod was first documented in the early 50s and 60s, and is still around to this day. The pod consists of many famous whales such as: J-1 Ruffles or J-2 Granny, who is 104 years old on estimate. It is divided into five subgroups, or maritimes. The J-14s (consisting of J-2), The J-16s, The J-17s and J-22s (J-17 and J-22 both connected through mothers whom were / are siblings) and lastly the J-8s which can also be referred to as the J-11s or J-19s.

The J-14 living members are: J-2 "Granny" J-14 "Samish", J-37 "Hy'Shya", J-40 "Suttles", J-45 "Se-Yi-Chyn" and J-49 "T'ilem In'goues" (missing calf J-55) their deceased members are: J-1 "Ruffles" J-12 "Sissy" J-24 "Canuck" J-23 "Capricorn" J-30 "Riptide" J-43 Unnamed and possibly J-55. J-2 "Granny:

The J-16 living members are: J-16 "Slick" J-26 "Mike" J-36 "Alki" J-42 "Echo" J-50 "Scarlet" and J-52 "Sonic." Their deceased are: J-7 "Sucia" (mother of J-16) J-3 "Merlin" J-33 "Keet" and J-48 Unnamed. Today the J-16s are one of the most remembered / favorite whales!

The J-17 living members are: J-17 "Princess Angeline", J-28 "Polaris", J-35 "Talequah", J-44 "Moby", J-46 "Star", J-47 "Notch" J-53 Unnamed and J-54 Unnamed. (Both J-53 and J-54 will be named (if) they survive until September.) The deceased members of the J-17s are: J-5 "Saratoga" (mother of J-17) and J-9 "Neah", who connects the J-17s to the J-22s.

The J-22s used to be called the J10s, until 2014. Their living members are: J-22 "Oreo" and her two sons J-34 "Doublestuf" and J-38 "Cookie". They have more deceased members then alive. The deceased members are: J-10 "Tahoma" (mother of J-22), J-18 "Everett", J-20 "Ewok", J-32 "Rhapsody" and J-9 "Neah".

Lastly the J-8s, the living members consist of: J-19 "Shachi" J-27 "Blackberry" J-31 "Thushi" J-39 "Mako", J-41 "Eclipse" and J-51 "Nova." Their deceased members are: J-6 "Ralph", J-8 "Spieden" (who lived to be 80), J-4 "Mama", J-11 "Blossom", J-15 Unnamed, J-21 "E.T." J-25 Unnamed and J-29 Unnamed.

Today this pod numbers at 31, with new additions and are in the midst of the "Baby Boom." They are part of the SRKW or Southern Resident Killer Whales, they are also on the endangered species list.
