Hajrović spent nine years in Grasshoppers academy from 2000 to 2009. He finally broke into the first team during the 2009–10 season. He was used mostly as an attacking midfielder and as a right winger. His strong left foot made him a valuable asset on the right side of midfield, as he often cut into the left to shoot with his stronger foot. His brother, Sead Hajrović, also played with him in the academy before moving on to Arsenal.

On 7 January 2014, Hajrović joined Turkish club Galatasaray on a four-and-a-half year deal with a transfer fee of €3.5 million being paid to Grasshopper. He cited his Bosniak roots and Islam as some of the reasons he agreed to join Galatasaray. He made his season debut against Bursaspor, coming in as a substitute in the second half in a 6–0 home win. He scored his first goal against Tokatspor on 5 February, in a 3–0 win in Turkish Cup.

Werder Bremen

After filing a complaint to FIFA that he received no payments from Galatasaray, Hajrović was given the right to move on a free transfer elsewhere. On 10 July 2014, he signed a four-year contract for Werder Bremen. He made his debut on 23 July 2014 for Werder Bremen in a 5–2 win against FC Wacker Innsbruck.

On 3 December 2016, in a 2–1 win against Ingolstadt, he suffered a severe knee injury which was reported as a cruciate ligament tear and ruled him out for the rest of the 2016–17 season.

Eibar (loan)

On 31 August 2015, Hajrović was loaned to La Liga side SD Eibar on a season-long deal.

International career

After playing for Switzerland at youth levels, he made his senior international debut on 14 November 2012, coming on as an 83rd-minute substitute in a friendly match against Tunisia. Edin Džeko said: "To Izet Hajrović and Seferović best of luck, Bosnia wants players who want to play for Bosnia led by heart".

Hajrović confirmed in June 2013 that he would opt to play for Bosnia and Herzegovina in the future as Hitzfeld did not give player desired game time.

On 13 August 2013, FIFA have confirmed that he is now available for Bosnia and Herzegovina, due his application for changing his sport citizenship from Swiss to Bosnian.

On 26 August Bosnian national team manager Safet Sušić included Hajrović in his squad for two September World cup qualification games against Slovakia at home and away. On 10 September 2013, Hajrović scored his first goal for Bosnia and Herzegovina against Slovakia, coming on from the bench in 77th minute of the game. His very first contact with the ball after just a few seconds on a pitch resulted in a stunning 25m-strike goal.

He was named in Bosnia and Herzegovina's squad for their first ever FIFA World Cup appearance, at 2014 Brazil tournament. He made his World Cup debut as starter in a 1–2 loss to Argentina in the opening group match, and was substituted off in the 71st minute. Izet was also starter in the second game vs Nigeria, but failed to impress which resulted in player not taking any part in the last group match against Iran.

His parents are Bosniaks from Bijelo Polje, Montenegro, but they relocated to Sarajevo in 1980. They moved to Switzerland in 1987. His younger brother, Sead Hajrović is also a footballer. His manager/agent is Zoran Samardžija.
