The Iyo Stone is located in the Portland Japanese Garden, a traditional Japanese garden inside of Washington Park, Portland, Oregon. It is a tribute to the first president of the Japanese Garden Society of Oregon, Philip Englehart, who served 1963–1964.
History
On January 15, 1963, the first Board Meeting of the Japanese Garden Society of Oregon was held, where Englehart was elected President. During his tenure, Englehart played an "active role" in securing materials for the gardens and traveling to Japan to get authentic pieces.
In June 1968, the Iyo Stone was added to the garden to commemorate Englehart's 1963–1964 presidency. He was the first president of the society.
Miles P. Englehart, son of Philip Englehart, also served as Japanese Garden Society of Oregon president before his passing. He was elected president in 1989.
