Itanos (Greek: Ίτανος) is a former municipality in the Lasithi regional unit, eastern Crete, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Siteia, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 197.406 km2 (76.219 sq mi). Its territory is rich in ancient archaeological sites, notably a Minoan city in Roussolakkos and the ancient Greek city Itanos in Erimopolis. The Minoan settlement was called Utana (cf. Linear B U-ta-ni-yo [KN E 749]). Herodotus recorded that the settlers from Thera (modern Santorini) who founded Cyrene owed their knowledge of the coast to an Itanian trader named Corobios.
