Italy was represented by Massimo Ranieri, with the song '"L'amore è un attimo", at the 1971 Eurovision Song Contest, which took place on 3 April in Dublin. Both song and performer were chosen internally by broadcaster RAI. Ranieri would later return to represent Italy at the 1973 contest in Luxembourg City.

On the night of the contest Ranieri performed 11th in the running order, following Belgium and preceding Sweden. The song was a dramatic ballad in the familiar Italian style, and Ranieri gave a powerful performance. At the close of voting "L'amore è un attimo" had received 91 points, placing Italy 5th of the 18 entries, the country's first top 5 placement since 1965.
