1973 local elections
Held on Wednesday 30 May 1973, a total of 526 councillors had to be elected to the 26 new District Councils of Northern Ireland. Held on Wednesday 20 May 1981, as before 526 councillors were to be elected to the 26 District Councils bia proportioinal representation.

1985 local elections
Held on Wednesday 15 May 1985, the independent Boundary Commission increased the number of councillors from 526 to 566 for the 26 District Councils. This election would see Sinn Féin run for the first time, having won a by-election in Omagh 'Area D' in March 1983. Sinn Féin's vote would come at the expense of the Irish Independence Party's vote.
