Iris verna is commonly found growing in nutrient poor acidic soils, in mesic to dry woodlands. It blooms in spring and generally has light to deep blue or violet petals, but rarely can have white petals. The sepals have a golden yellow signal. There are two variations, Iris verna var. verna and Iris verna var. smalliana. Iris verna var. verna grows on the coastal plains, while Iris verna var. smalliana grows in more mountainous regions.
