International Learning Unit or (ILU) is an outcome based measurement of learning designed for lifelong learning activities. The ILU uses a competency based approach to measure education courses. The ILU was designed to be used to as an alternate measurement and standard to time based measurements. The ILU measurement is used to provide evidence of completion of continuing education requirements mandated by certification bodies, professional societies, or governmental licensing boards.

History ILU was developed by the Learning Resources Network (LERN).

Definition 0.1 Learning Units is gained by an outcome based evaluation composed of 5 content items learned, with a pass rate of 80%.

A Content Item is a fundamental aspect of knowledge, a collection of key facts, a set of essential abilities, and/or a demonstrated understanding that is the intended outcome of the learning activity.
