The Institute of Tropical Forest Conservation in Uganda grew out of the Impenetrable Forest Conservation Project (IFCP) initiated in 1986 to protect the area now known as the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (BINP), a World Heritage site in southwestern Uganda. It became the Institute of Tropical Forest Conservation (ITFC) in 1991, the year BINP was established.
